Welcome Guest Blogger Brenda Whiteside

Thanks for inviting me to your Off the Keyboard blog, Sarah. Since you left me wide open for a topic, I thought I might talk about my mom. It’s a couple of months until Mothers’ Day but what the heck. My mom is in my face regularly nowadays so she’s an easy target.

We’ve just moved back to Arizona where I was born and raised. All my family still lives here – desert rats to the core. Part of the reason for coming back to Arizona is my mom. She’s eighty-one and although still doing great, time is sliding by. I’ve made her happy.

I grew up listening to her tell stories of her childhood, totally fascinated, and I still love to listen. When her mother died, her half-brothers and sisters were taken and placed in Indian boarding schools. She was raised by her father, an Irish migrant worker, and they traveled between California and Oklahoma, sometimes hopping freight trains. They were poor, the war was on, but she had a happy childhood. She was starry eyed and dreamed of becoming a movie star. She has a beautiful voice – actually got to sing on the radio once – and was always in her school plays. There were rough times, too. One year, they moved around so often that she attended twelve schools. My grandfather drank too much, but he loved her and protected her.

Several years ago, I began taking notes. These bits and pieces developed into a book, Honey On White Bread. I made all the mistakes first time authors make and received a stack of rejections. I put the book away until I found success with other books and stories. Two years ago, I dug it out and went to work again. This was the book of my heart. Quite often the book of a writer’s heart never makes it to print. For whatever reason, it seems like a much better book to the author than to the publisher.

The time period, 1945, and the age of the hero and heroine (twenty and seventeen) in Honey On White Bread befuddled some publishers – not sure what subgenre to consider. But I’ve been lucky. Melange Books loved it as Women’s Historical Romance, Post WWII.

That comment I made about Mom being in my face regularly is not only due to her happiness over my close proximity again, but she’s a walking advertisement for the book. Even though I took a couple of incidents she told me about her younger life and loosely used a couple of her personality traits, the book is a work of fiction. But to her, it’s close enough to be a book “about her life” and she’s spreading the word. Every clerk at Fry’s Food Store, Dillard’s Department Store, every long lost relative and friend and even the car wash attendant knows about the book. Her perception is helped by the cover shot – a picture of her and my dad. The cover artist had trouble finding suitable era photos so I sent her some examples and voila! She ended up using one of them.

Mom has read the book twice and has taken it as her own story.

Since Melange Books is a small publisher, Honey On White Bread is not stocked on the bookshelves at Barnes and Noble. Only the e-version is available everywhere except through the publisher. There is a lapse in time between when the e-book releases and stores like B and N can order it in print. Mom doesn’t do e-books so this really miffs her. That doesn’t stop her from calling B and N every other day to ask if they have it yet. I had to draw the line at her latest idea. She thought if she took in a couple of copies and left them on a shelf, they would be so awed that they would order more.

When seventeen-year-old Claire Flanagan is wrenched from her father and deposited at the Good Shepherd’s Home for Wayward Girls, all dreams for Hollywood stardom are lost. But when twenty-year-old Benjamin Russell helps secure her release, she starts to believe in a happy future with him…until she discovers his ex-girlfriend is pregnant.

In this post WWII coming of age novel, Claire discovers the silver screen can’t compare with the fight she takes on for the leading role in her own life.

Welcome Guest Blogger Brenda Whiteside

What a pleasure being on Sarah’s stylish, entertaining blog. Thank you, Sarah for having me.

The other day a friend told me about a book she thoroughly enjoyed reading that was written from a dog’s point of view. My dog, Rusty, could write a good “Day in the Life Of” book. He helps put up paper products when I get home from Costco, and on laundry day he helps me carry the dirty clothes down to the basement. He’s very busy keeping the mailman, FedEx and the man in brown from breaking into the house and stealing all his dog toys. He could write about his inner clock that is quite punctual and his super powers such as his hearing – when my husband turns the corner a block over, Rusty is at the window. He could write about his daydream of having a couple of three year old humans around that would always have something good to lick off their faces. No doubt he could write a best seller if he could get the paw thing right on the keyboard or, better yet, dictate to me. I could get a byline.

All my books have an animal in the storyline. (Hmm…wonder if all animal books have a human in the storyline.) A useless, but loved, old hound makes a walk-on appearance in my YA historical romance. In my contemporary western romance, which I am in the throes of editing for publication, a sixteen pound Siamese cat named Kirby causes a little havoc. Chip the chipmunk has an important supporting role in Sleeping with the Lights On. Sandra has suspicions Chip may be a Chipette the way the little critter takes to Carson, the handsome cowboy crooner.

A dog, a cat and a chipmunk – maybe next I’ll have a talking cockatoo with secrets.

I’d love to hear your animal stories, pets or otherwise (I had a mouse recently cause me an AC repair when the little devil chewed the wiring running into the unit). Leave me a comment and I’ll draw one of you to receive a print copy of my book, Sleeping with the Lights On. Don’t forget to include your email so I can reach you.

After two failed marriages and countless relationships, Sandra Holiday thinks she’s met the man to end her years of less than perfect choices; choices that not only derailed her travel-related career plans but also left her single and broke.

Carson Holiday, a Las Vegas country crooner with swoon-inducing good looks, spent his adult life pursuing a recording contract and love, never holding on to either. After eighteen years, he drops back into Sandra’s life, reigniting an attraction he can’t deny.

When Carson reappears, Sandra must choose again. Only this time, nothing’s as it seems. A secret admirer, a redheaded stalker, and an eccentric millionaire throw her on a dangerous path, with Carson her only truth.

As life confronts her with yet another turning point, will her decisions find her eternally sleeping with the lights on – or will she finally discover a way to turn them off?

EXCERPT:

“When do you go back to Vegas?”

Carson hesitated. “In a day or two.”

“You sound rather vague.” And still allusive. What could be the big secret about this charity gig he couldn’t divulge?

“I have a few more things to find out. I’ll be out of here as soon as I get all my questions answered. It’s complicated.”

We’d reached the edge of my apartment complex.

“Carson, honestly, how complicated can a gig—”

Pulling me around, we stopped, facing each other. My head said run like hell, but my legs wouldn’t respond. Mushy from wine or Carson and moonlight. I couldn’t be sure which.

“Have lunch with me tomorrow, darlin’.” His fingers slipped from mine to gingerly brush along my forearm. The moonlight caught in his eyes. “Another hour of your time with a long lost friend?”

“Yes.” My voice went all husky and come-hither. I wanted to kick myself for being so easy.

“Good.” Grasping my hand again, he led me toward the door. “What’s the address of your office?”

I struggled to shake off the moon shadows and to remember where I worked. Once inside the building, I took a scrap of paper from my purse and wrote the address.

“I’ll walk you to your door and say goodnight,” he said, tucking the scrap of paper in his pocket. “Unless you want to have me in for a goodnight drink.”

I didn’t answer. If he’d only known the extent of my uncertainty at that moment, a little persistence might have made me cave.

“Okay, then—” His mouth gaped.

I followed his bewildered look to my apartment door.

Spotlight On... Brenda Whiteside

Please help me in welcoming fellow The Wild Rose Press author Brenda Whiteside to the keyboard today.  Welcome, Brenda, can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hi Sarah. Thanks for having me.

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and lived there until I married a man doing a stint in the Army. He whisked me off to Massachusetts the day after we married. The Army stint ended but our habit of moving around didn’t. We’ve lived all over the place – Germany, Florida, California, Nevada, Arizona, and Minnesota. He’s made a gypsy out of me and I’m happy about that. And we love to travel. We have one son who is a talented singer/songwriter living out west among the pines. Our second son is a very hairy guy named Rusty.

Besides writing, I like to ride behind my husband on the motorcycle, bike, hike, garden, and read. My favorite entertainment is sitting on our deck, glass of red wine in hand, with friends.

Tell us about SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHTS ON and where we can find it.

Sleeping with the Lights On was published by The Wild Rose Press and is available in both e-book and trade print. You can buy it on-line from all the standard on-line book stores, directly from The Wild Rose Press, or order from a brick and mortar store such as Barnes and Noble. Two book stores in Northern Minnesota have it on the shelf (Sister Wolf Books and Beagle Books).

The story is about discovery. Sandra is not the typical romance heroine in that she is fifty and twice divorced. She’s still looking for a career and true love. And she approaches her life with a sense of humor. There’s a bit of suspense on her journey, too. Discovery can happen at all phases of life. This is the blurb:

How did you start writing?

I started out this life as an artist and dabbled in writing. I loved both mediums but majored in art in school. When we moved to Minnesota seventeen years ago, writing became my passion and I’ve no idea why. Honestly. Stories started brewing in my head so I wrote short stories. Now I HAVE to write. A day without writing is so incomplete. I took some creative writing classes way back then, formed a critique group with one of my classmates, and progressed from there.

What is it about the romance genre that appeals to you?

Hot, sexy men – what else?! Just kidding. Don’t want to perpetuate the stereotype! Is there anyone in this world that hasn’t been touched by romance? Romance exists in every story. And the romance genre is extensive – many, many sub-genres. Even those who say they don’t read romance have read romance. Many of the classics would be classified as romance today.

Describe your writing in three words.

Oh, the tough questions! Hmmm…I guess I’ll have to give you three words that I aspire to: character-driven, entertaining, and discovery.

What do you find is the hardest part of writing a book?

The last two chapters. I get real antsy by the end of a book. I get to a point where I want to be done with it. All the characters have totally revealed themselves to me and I know the ending. I have to tell myself to slow down, don’t rush the conclusion.

What is next for you?

More of the same only bigger and better, I hope! I’ve just finished the rough of my second novel. Getting it submitted is at the top of my list right now.

Who are your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?

Oh, I have so many. My tastes are all over the place. To name a few, Maeve Benchy, Dick Francis, Emily Bronte, John Steinbeck, Philip Roth, Nora Roberts, Ernest Hemingway, J R R Tolkien, John Grisham, Jennifer Crusie.

I’m reading two books right now. The Venetian Betrayal by Steve Berry and Angels Fall by Nora Roberts. I’ve always got such a back log on my “to be read” shelf that I’m hardly ever reading new releases.

Where can we find you on the web?

At my home, my official web site:   http://www.brendawhiteside.com/

On FaceBook (way too much):   http://www.facebook.com/BrendaWhitesideAuthor

And sometimes on Coffee Time Romance and More Forum:  http://www.coffeetimeromance.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=1273

Is there anything you would like to ask our readers?

First let me thank you for having me today: Thanks Sarah!!

I’d like to throw out one of the questions you asked me to the readers.

What is it about the romance genre that appeals to you?

Thanks for visiting with us today, Brenda!
