Spotlight On...Kat Henry Doran

Today's guest is the very talented, Kat Henry Doran. Kat is here to tell us about her newest release, which sounds fantastic! She's also giving away a tote bag in the winner's choice of colors from www.KatsKarryAlls.blogspot.com. All you have to do to be entered to win is leave her a comment.

Hi, Sarah. Thanks for inviting me to your blog today.

Welcome, Kat, thanks for visiting with us today. Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I am a registered nurse, retired from the game of pushing suppositories and bedpans, a wife, mother and grandmother. I like to design and make tote bags of all sizes and uses and sell them at craft shows and online from my blog site [Kat's Kustom Karry-Alls]. I write romantic suspense and straight romance. Last year, under the name Veronica Lynch, I got into writing novella length straight romances and it's been so much fun, I might stick with it. I am intrigued by the idea of writing a series of three to four novellas under one cover.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

My latest romance, “Mad Dog and the Archangel”, is part of the Class of '85 series out of the Wild Rose Press, the release date is January 11, 2012. It is about Rafe Archangeli who comes home to bury his best friend and learns he's been left a multi-million dollar legacy. Not only does that change this former con man's life, but meeting Grace “mad dog” Dunavan makes him take a second look at settling down with one woman.

Which character is your favorite and why?

I like them both but Rafe has lived with me for too long not to be my favorite. He was an abused and neglected child, victimized by the people of his hometown because of his Native American heritage and his mother's occupation [prostitute] and other socially unacceptable habits [drugs and alcohol]. In his adult years Rafe turned to substances himself, so he's not had the easiest time of it. When he meets Grace for the first time she takes his breath away. Then she seduces him. The morning after he discovers the nature of her former occupation. I don't want to give away any more spoilers.

Will there be any sequels or other books in the same series?

Unfortunately, the Class of '85 series is winding down. Mad Dog is the second to last release. We totaled 24 stories; I was privileged to contribute two other stories to the reunion: The List [Veronica Lynch] and Embraceable You [Kat Henry Doran]. Both are a lot of fun.

What was the hardest thing for you about writing this story?

Finishing it. It wasn't that I developed writer's block; I simply kept putting it off and putting it off. As it got down to the wire, I felt rushed and pressured—all my own fault of course—something kept telling me the story wasn't ready to be written. On the way home from a retreat at a local community of seers and psychics the black moment came to me. From there the story wrote itself. The pressure waiting for the 'ah ha' moment to come was incredible.

What is it about the romance genre that appeals to you?

The characters; how they interact with one another and those around them. I believe in happily ever after and redemption and forgiveness. I love conflict and look for stories where the hero and heroine will never end up together because of really strong internal forces. I loathe stories which are contrived and unbelievable.

What’s next for you?

I'd like to write a series whose characters are connected in some fashion to the criminal justice system of a the cities and towns of a fictional county in western New York State. So we're talking law enforcement, attorneys, probation, parole, victim advocates, social workers, drug and alcohol counselors; advocates for the homeless and abused; and of course, medical professionals.

Rafael Archangeli returns home to Summerville to bury an old friend, collect his inheritance, and then return to the only life he knows—conning wealthy women out of their money. In Rafe's world, money not only equals success, it goes a long way to obliterate the stigma of his past.

Grace Dunavan, former nun turned community activist, gave up worldly goods a long time ago with no regrets. But she's never known a man with the raw appeal of the Scourge of Summerville: Rafael Archangeli.

Their first meeting is like an errant strike of lightning, fierce and stunning in intensity, and takes both by surprise. Has Grace turned Rafe into a changed man? Or is he using his inheritance to pull off the biggest scam of his life?

Excerpt:

Safety First.

A personal motto that served Grace Dunavan well for the past thirty-something years. She never picked up strange men. In fact, she rarely dated men, strange or otherwise. And wasn't she the first to preach the wisdom of obtaining a detailed history—family, medical and sexual before contemplating a walk on the wild side? With any man, including the brother of her best friend.

Especially one whose thick mop of jet colored hair, hooded black eyes and razor-sharp cheekbones, all of which held undeniable appeal for a good girl who always did what the nuns and her parents dictated. With a name like Archangeli he should be a protector, not a walking advertisement that proclaimed: I've Been There, Done That; Let Me Tell You All About It.

As he helped her into her coat, Grace heard Gaby murmur something about an attorney who was trying to track down Rafe. None of it made sense. What woman in her right mind could think straight when faced with a man who redefined potency?

It was a night of firsts for Grace: leaving a party with a man she'd never met before; admitting how and where she'd learned to drive; breaking the land speed record for contemplating her first one night stand.

Spotlight On... Kat Henry Doran

My guest today at Off the Keyboard is author Kat Henry Doran. Welcome Kat, can you tell us about yourself?

I live in Upstate New York, close to Lake Ontario, with my husband and three children. In my professional life I am a registered nurse and have been privileged to work in a number of different clinical areas of nursing: the OR, labor and delivery, clinical instructor, long term care, nursing administration, forensic nurse examiner and my last position as malpractice nurse investigator. Each job taught me something new about the human body or spirit. I am now retired. For fun, I provide child care for two of my grandchildren a couple days a week.

Wow, what a career! Tell us about the book you’re here to promote.

Embraceable You was a February 2011 release through The Wild Rose Press as part of the Class of 85 reunion series. It is the story of two people who come together for one night and discover things about themselves they previously had been quite reluctant to address. It's a honey of a story.

What was your first reaction when you got your cover art?

I have received some terrific cover art on other books; this one is very special because of the way the artist depicted the damaged, tough as nails heroine being held by the reluctant- caretaker hero. I rarely let my emotions get the better of me; this puppy brought me to tears.

It is a stunning cover. How did you start writing?

I did some writing in nursing school which received some attention from the instructors—of course I quickly and defiantly ignored their suggestions that I pursue writing. Years later I sat down to write a 'let me catch you up on my life' letter to a friend from my OR days. 27 pages later [no kidding; I used all the kids' notebook paper] I sat back and said, 'Hmm. Do I have something here?' That was 1983. My first book was published in 2004.

Which comes first, plot or characters?

The germ for a story idea which quickly evolves into the plot. I get my ideas from every day things in life, in the newspapers or on national TV. Once I know what I want the story to be about, I do preliminary research on the topics I want to cover. Then I go to work on inventing characters.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you began your writing career?

Goals. Motivation. Conflict. If I get them down, and it's not always easy, I'm set. The rest of it: POV; pacing; tight, snappy dialogue can always be fixed, but without the GMC I haven't got a prayer.

What is the most interesting comment you’ve ever received on one of your books?

This is from a well known review site, print and electronic: “. . .characters are all portrayed in brutal detail with their flaws for all to see so that you can't help but be drawn into the story. . .” To this day I'm not sure if the reviewer liked the story or not, but she got the gist of it and that's most important to me.

Who, in your life, is your biggest source of inspiration and why?

Anyone, man or woman, who experienced profound adversity, such as criminal victimization, then went on and survived well. That's the best revenge any of us can get against the bad guys.

What is something readers would be surprised you do?

I love to cook; I am a Food Network junkie. I never miss a Public Television auction if it features the Bee Gees or Gershwin music.

Thanks for visiting with us today.

Sarah, this was a lot of fun. Thank you so much for inviting me.

EMBRACEABLE You (A Class of '85 story)
  by Kat Henry Doran
Available at The Wild Rose Press

Award winning photo-journalist Dru Horvath travels the world, documenting human rights abuses. This vocation helps her avoid risking her heart. Everyday working stiff Rory McElroy, a two-time loser when it comes to women, wants nothing to do with another relationship, thank you very much.

But when Dru comes back into his life, Rory’s not sure which poses the greater threat: protecting her from third world thugs who want to silence her permanently—or allowing the one woman who captured his heart years ago to embrace him forever.

Suddenly, Dru remembered the back-up phone tucked inside the double zippered pocket in her satchel, right beside the extra flash cards and rolls of antacids. Hot damn. All was not lost. With a grin, she hefted the bag over her shoulder and turned toward the bathroom. “I won't be long.”

Before she made the first step, he slid in front of the door, blocking her access. “Give it up.”

Down to her last strike, she pulled the affronted female card. Granted, she used it maybe once in a decade, but Fiona was probably tearing her hair by now. “I beg your pardon?”

Leaning forward, he brought them nose to nose. “Play much poker, Horvath? Your face just lit up like the Fourth of July, which tells me you've got something more stashed in the tote. Unless you let me search it, it stays with me.”

Clutching the canvas bag to her chest, she sneered, “The only thing in here is my outfit for tonight, McElroy. If you think I'm parading around naked in front of you, one of us is a couple fries short of a happy meal.”

His response came in the form of another gimme motion with those thick, blunt fingers. “I'll close my eyes if I encounter any lacy unmentionables.”

She knew the instant he found the back-up. The screw-you look morphed into a smirk. “It's not wise to mess with Homeland Security, sweetie. Those guys eat small animals for breakfast.”
