I was going to share this piece of heaven on my Pinterest board titled 'My Shoe Fetish' but it seems that even though I've seen full monty pics on there, Pinterest has decided this photo is not allowed. So, my friends, I've decided to put it here.
You.

No, not me, the characters in my WIP. Yup, Black Phoenix is gearing up for a tour. Which means I've been immersed in research. Research that, I'll admit, I'm really enjoying! Here's one of the things I discovered:

My Birthday ~ A day in history
The Year of my Birth October 9
It was a Thursday
- The Supremes release ‘Someday We’ll Be Together’
- The Archies ‘Sugar,Sugar’ is number one on the Billboard Hot 100s
- Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young opened at Fillmore West, San Francisco
- Paint Your Wagon, starring Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and Jean Seberg releases
- One of the years best selling novels is Naked Came the Stranger - a deliberately terrible book with a lot of sex, to illustrate the point that popular American literary culture had become mindlessly vulgar.
- Bewitched is in the midst of a story arc involving Samantha’s pregnancy, which will feature the birth of Tabitha on next week’s episode.
- President Nixon presents the Congressional Medal of Honor to four soldiers: Sergeant Robert M. Patterson of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Captain James Sprayberry of Sylacauga, Alabama, Captain Jack H. Jacobs of Fords, New Jersey, and Major Patrick H. Brady of Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
- A Chicago police officer (Leroy N Berry Jr.) was murdered in his squad car. His police star and revolver were stolen. The killer(s) were never captured.
- In Chicago, the United States National Guard is called in for crowd control as demonstrations continue in connection with the trial of the ""Chicago Eight"" (trial started on September 24)
- Fun Fact: October 9 is the 282nd day of the year (283rd in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. There are 83 days remaining until the end of the year.
Have a fantastic day, everyone!

PMS and the Romance Writer
Trying to write but...
my characters are fighting
the dogs won't stop barking
I want chocolate
my pants are too tight
I have cramps
my husband is chewing too loudly
I want ice cream
the garbage smells - even though I emptied it five minutes ago
where's the Midol?
I want popcorn
my boobs are swelling out of my bra
now the neighbors dogs are barking
my characters are still fighting
is this ever going to end?
there's not enough Midol in the world to fix this
screw it, I'm going back to bed!

Random Photo Day
This weekend my family and I did something we haven't done in years...we went away. Not really a vacation, more like a mini-vacay or getaway, as we called it. Where did we go? To Sandusky, Ohio and a fabulous amusement part called, Cedar Point - 364 acres of fun located on a Lake Erie peninsula. Here's our view from the giant ferris wheel.
What did you do this weekend?

My Funny Bone
I have a confession to make. I’m a laughaholic. I love to laugh, and do so whenever and wherever possible. It’s not always pretty – head thrown back, mouth wide open – but it does seem to be contagious. Especially if you get me to laugh hard enough I snort. My BFF can make me laugh that hard, and does any and every time we’re together. She can get me laughing so hard it literally becomes difficult to breathe. God, I love that woman! My family makes me laugh. On any given Saturday night you will find me, my husband and our two sons (17 and 18) sitting in a local restaurant having dinner. This may not be too strange – although I know a lot of families whose teenaged sons don’t spend much time around the parents anymore – but that’s not even the strange part. Okay, strange may not be the right word, but…whenever you find us out like that, you’ll know us because we are the table that can’t stop laughing. It’s true, mom, dad, 17yo son and 18yo son are always laughing. Always. Laughter is a huge part of my life, and my husband and sons make me laugh.
This is the one thing I am most thankful for in life. I can’t imagine a life without laughter. I can’t relate to people who don’t laugh long or often. I can find laughter in some of the dumbest things. When something is so messed up it’s either laugh or cry, I choose laughter. Every time. And when I’m blue, I turn to laughter to lift my spirits.
So it’s not surprising that some of my favorite contemporary authors incorporate humor in their writing: MaryJanice Davidson, Susan Anderson, Rachel Gibson, Amie Louellen. Getting lost in a fabulous romance, falling for the hero – a hero who’s funny – it’s like falling for my husband all over again. It doesn’t get much better than that. I think this is one of the hardest things for an author to do – reach readers by touching both their hearts and their funny bones. It’s also one of those skills I don’t have. No matter how hard I try, I can’t write funny.
So instead, I’ll keep scouring the local bookstores for more humorous romances. And if I keep that little dream alive – the one where one day I can write a book that touches the readers heart, tickles their funny bone AND keeps them on the edge of their seat – well, there’s no harm in dreaming, right?

Recently, it has come to my attention that not everyone agrees on what is deemed "attractive". Okay, okay, I've always known this. But this fact was driven home again the other day when I was happily surfing the net, going from man candy blog post to man candy blog post, and I came upon a site that stopped me in my virtual tracks. Ooohhh, why did it stop you in your tracks, Sarah? I'm glad you asked.
I want to tell you it was because I stumbled upon a tasty hunk of man candy that caused all the saliva to dry up in my mouth and my throat to stick shut. I want to tell you it was because he was so damn hot he caused my monitor to fog and I had to toss my laptop aside and run in search of my husband. Yeah, that's what I want to tell you. This, however, would be a lie.
You see, I just don't understand what the blog owner found attractive in this guy. In fact, my reaction was more along the lines of laughing hysterically, then emailing the picture to my writer pals under the heading: Funny or Hot? Soon, the the discussion title morphed into Hot or Not?
We had so much fun with this one, that I thought I would share it with you. So here you go...

It's been a few months since our beloved miniature schnauzer, Pearl, suffered a stroke and had to be put to sleep.
The first dog my husband and I got as a couple, and the smartest girl we've ever known, Pearl will always hold a special place in my heart. But as I seem to do routinely, I decided that it was time for a new dog to come and live with us. A special dog, one that needed a new home - a rescue. And if that wasn't enough, I was thinking a dog like the one I lost before Pearl - a lovely shih tzu we called Tils - would be perfect.
So I got online and I began searching. I found a handful of beautiful dogs who needed to be re-homed because of financial difficulties with their current families. I found even more who where homeless. But I couldn't find the right dog. The dog who called to me ~ who's photo told me instantly that she was the one meant to join our family.
Until I stumbled upon this one...

This is me, taken using a sketch setting on my son's phone designed to make the photo resemble a drawing. The item in front of my face is a plate - I hate having my picture taken.

Reality is Overrated

Recently I’ve read a couple of blog posts from women who want more realism in romance. Not in how people meet, or how quickly they fall for each other. Not even in the slim chance of being kidnapped, saved by the stunningly handsome hero and riding off into the sunset. No, the reality that some women want to see more of in romance is in the hero and heroines themselves. What do I mean? A few things they want:
Now wait just one darn minute… No more multiple orgasmic women? Really?
Most romance readers are women – 91% according to RWA National – and so I’m especially stumped by this. Sure, the female reader wants to be able to put herself in the shoes of the heroine, and sure the heroine has to be real enough that the reader can achieve the transition easily. But so real that she can’t orgasm?
While I like realism in romance and enjoy reading about heroines I can relate to – women struggling to lose weight, find the right man, claim her place in the workplace because she’s just as smart and talented as the men she works with – there are some places I DON’T want to feel too much of a connection with the heroine. I don’t want a hero who farts all the time. I don’t want to think about morning breath or needing to use the restroom before I can get my sexy on. And orgasms? Bring ‘em! Lots of them! This is fiction. This is my ESCAPE! Time to immerse myself in a different world, a different place, a place where flatulence doesn’t intrude on those intimate moments with a lover (unless it’s a romantic comedy, then I’m good with it). A place where women – all women – are multi-orgasmic and no matter what, the hero knows just what she needs to get her there.
*deep breath*
Sorry. I lost myself for a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not totally against realism in fiction. There’s nothing worse than picking up a romance and cracking the spine, only to realize that the heroine is so far-fetched that you just can’t connect with her. And I have nothing against overweight heroes or heroines, balding or bald heroes – in fact, I have an upcoming book where the hero is not only bald, but he’s fifty years old! Fifty year-old heroes are a romance taboo. Guess what, I don’t care! Because fifty year-old heroes are also realistic. Fifty year-old men can be sexy as hell and Thomas Sr. is sexy with a capital ‘S’! But I digress.
Yes, I demand realism in my romances, but I also demand fiction. After all, this is romance fiction we’re talking about. Seriously folks, if I want nothing but realism I’ll read the paper. There’s enough depressing shit in there to last a lifetime. Enough that after a few pages, I’ll need my escape…wait, maybe I will go find a newspaper. Then I’ll sit down and immerse myself in a world where good always wins over evil, happily-ever-after happens all the time, and sex with the hero is both sensual and satisfying. Again and again and again…
*sigh*
Seriously, what could be better than that? Isn’t that the reason so many people chose to ‘lose’ themselves in a book?

- Bald/balding heroes
- Heroes who struggle with their weight as much as their heroines do
- No more multiple orgasmic women. Instead, give them women who either can’t or find it extremely difficult to orgasm
