Spotlight On...Katherine Grey

While I was thinking about what to write, my gaze landed on the numerous cookbooks on the book shelf. After contemplating them for a while, I’ve decided I love food. Not just eating it, but reading about it, watching TV about it. I like to watch the Food Network on occasion, look through cookbooks, and I read about 6 different mystery series that all revolve around food. Most of them include recipes either within the story itself or at the back of the book. I didn’t even notice the theme until my brother asked me why all the books I read are about food. One series is about a cupcake shop, another a cookie store, another a caterer, another revolves around a candy store, another about a cookbook store, and of course, one about a doughnut shop. (Ok, not all the books I read are about food, but the last few he saw me reading were ones within the different mystery series I mentioned above.) I also enjoyed Shirley Jump’s romance series that starts with, “The Bride Wore Chocolate” and ends with “The Bachelor Preferred Pastry.”

I told my brother I read about other things and he just said, “uh huh.”

“Really,” I told him, “I just got a new mystery out of the library called, ‘How to wash a cat.’”

He laughed and said, “Okay, cats and food then.”

“And romance,” I called after him. “Don’t forget romance.”

Have you read any good books lately?

Thank you, Sarah for hosting me today.

IMPETUOUS
by Katherine Grey

Mateo de Montayas, an impoverished Spanish count, comes to England to recover a stolen family heirloom and to satisfy his hunger for revenge against the man who destroyed his family. Arriving in London, he learns his hated enemy died three years before but has left behind a daughter. What better way to retrieve the heirloom and exact revenge than to use her to his advantage?

Teresa Darlington will do anything to keep scandal away from her frail mother and prove her father wasn't a thief, even risk her reputation in a race to find the missing heirloom before the Count does. But she didn't count on falling in love with the man determined to ruin her family. Can she find the heirloom before he does and protect her family, or will her heart lead her in a different direction?

Cats are not my scene, but romance...and good food? How could they not be. The last few years while I've been seriously writing my hubby has done most of the cooking. If, it seems to me that we're having too many repeats of the same dish I sneakily move around the cookbooks in the cupboard with the glass door. The ones I want to eat from become amazingly 'in his face'. Men are so predictable...Huh? At least mine is. :-)*smiley face*

Hi Katherine:

I loved the post about food! In our family, everything revolves around food - talking about it, preparing it, eating it....my brother sends me pics from across the country of dishes he's just conjured up. He has the 'gift' like our Italian mother. She's still cooking from scratch at 82! Also, I love your cover - Impetuous sounds like a great story. Good luck!!

Best,
Mary

Nancy,

I love the idea of rotating the cookbooks. I have to admit, when I'm pressed for time, I cook one of the old standbys and lately, that's been quite a bit. Luckily, my family hasn't started to complain...yet. :o) Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Mary,

Your mother sounds like my mine. I try to duplicate some of her recipes but they never taste quite the same. She says because her secret ingredient is her love. I say it's because her measurements usually are "add just enough" or a "scooch" of the ingredient. I like the book cover too. The artist did a great job. Thanks for the good wishes. :o)

Hi Katherine -
I love a good revenge story, and yours sounds great. I love food, too. (sitting here eating cinnamon toast with my morning coffee) but I'm not sure I could read a whole series based on food. It all comes down to the fact I just can't take the extra calories! LOL.
Best wishes wit your new book!

Hi Sarah and Katherine,

I love books with food in them. I even made one of my heroes (Zach in "This Can't Be Love") a chef.

Have you ever read The Chocoholic Mysteries? Good stories and each one has fun chocolate trivia in it. (It makes me crave chocolate every time I read one!)

Hi Lynne,

I love a good revenge story too. I have to be careful it doesn't end up being a reoccurring theme in my work. I know what you mean about the calories. In the summer, I'm pretty active so everything balances out, but during cold weather however I tend to hibernate and have to be careful of packing on the pounds and some of the recipes in those books can be pretty tempting. LOL. :o)

Hi Debra,

I haven't heard of the Chocoholic Mysteries. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the heads up. I'm adding "This Can't Be Love," to my TBR list. There's nothing like reading about a hunky guy who knows his way around a kitchen. :o)

Katherine, your book sound enticing. Best wishes for many sales. I love cookbooks, but now have an aversion to cooking. Go figure. Fortunately, my husband now cooks so I can write. My Hero!

Ohhh - I'm so jealous of you ladies whose husbands cook! My is allergic to the kitchen it seems. Although, he makes a mean cup of coffee and plies me with them while I write. Always a good thing : )

I love stories that involve food in some way too. It grounds it in realism. I don't include it much in my stories - probably because I do enough of it myself at home! : )I'm a SAHM and do a lot of cooking and baking from scratch.

Hi Caroline,

I love cookbooks too. I'd rather bake than cook though. No hubby for me so if I don't cook, I don't eat. LOL. Thanks for the good wishes and for stopping by. :o)

Hi LaVerne,

I'm jealous too! I need a man in my kitchen. How nice of your hubby to bring you coffee.

I cook and bake from scratch too. My mom is from the South so making anything out of a box is practically sacrilegious. Thanks for stopping by. :o)

Hi Sarah,

Thanks again for having me as your guest. I had a great time. :o)

I knew I shouldn't have tweeted how bored I was as work this morning. My dull day turned hectic real fast after that. I'll be back after I get some dinner, but just wanted to tell you all that my husband LOVES to cook. And as a bonus, he's incredibly good at it. Every year he is asks to make the Thanksgiving turkey for the extended family get together. Mmmmm.

I was super happy to see how many of you stopped in for a visit while I was working today. Thanks! If you're like me, your TBR list grows longer every day. I may have to rethink this hosting guests thing for the sake of my pocketbook.

Nah! :-)

Hi, Katherine and Sarah!

I love cookbooks, too, but don't get much chance to experiment anymore. My husband is gone most of the time and I don't get too creative when he isn't here. He's an excellent cook, too. My daughter is the baker in the family, but tends to limit so we don't gain too much weight!

I believe the question was "Have you read any good books lately?" I just finished reading The Matchmaker's Mark by Regan Black. Described as a "light-hearted paranormal romance", it was a fun read!
