Open Promo For Authors ~ January Releases

Welcome to Open Promo for Authors!  Once again I've decided to open the floor (or blog post as the case may be) and allow you, my fellow romance authors, a chance to tell me about your book. Do you have a new release next month? Then I want to hear about it!

I do have a few pesky rules though:

  • The book has to be a romance. I don't care what genre romance, but my readership is romance so we're going to give them what they love.
  •  You can post for yourself or you can post about a fabulous new book you can't wait to get your hands on and you think we should all run out and buy.
  • If you include a short excerpt in the post, please include a rating AT THE BEGINNING of the post. Let's be thoughtful of those readers who are uncomfortable with some heat levels.
  • Also, I reserve the right to delete a post if it promotes objectionable content. (incest, rape, etc.)
Simple enough, right? Post away!

Thanks for the opportunity, Sarah! My January 13th release, Cassidy's War is a post Civil War, American Victorian romance coming from The Wild Rose Press.

Here's the blurb and a PG excerpt:
The Civil War is over, but Cassidy's War is just beginning.

Cassidy Stuart longs to attend medical school. Training beside her physician father and serving as a nurse during the war have only increased her desire to be a doctor with her own practice. When the man who left her at the altar returns, she's determined not to let him upset the plans she's set for herself.

Until his mission is accomplished, George Masters must hide his identity as a Pinkerton agent as he investigates a physician living in George's former hometown, a short distance from Cassidy's home. When he finds Cassidy hasn’t married, he hopes he can rekindle their love while trying to protect her and the townsfolk from the evil Dr. Madison.

Can their love be renewed despite the villain's desire for revenge against them both?

Excerpt:

After settling her on the wicker settee, he sat beside her, enveloping her hand and rubbing it between his large, warm ones. His sandalwood and male scent invited her to lean into his warmth, but she held herself rigid, her emotions on guard.

She had so many questions she wanted answered, like where he'd been all these years and how he made his living.

"Cassie, I know you must hate me for leaving you.'

She narrowed her gaze. "It's hard to think kindly on someone who leaves you, no matter what the reason. I know you were hurting, but we could have made a life together. Healed each other."

He shook his head. "I would've held you back."

"From what?"

"Well...you're a doctor. That was your dream when I returned from prison camp."

"And look what a fine mess I've made of that." She bowed her head, studying his hand wrapped around hers. His warm touch sent tingles straight to her core. But what was he doing here? Did he really come back for her, or had something or someone else drawn him to Burkeville?

"George, what's the real reason you're here?" She held her breath, hoping for the answer she wanted to hear.

He withdrew his hand from hers, taking his warmth with it. "I thought I should come back and check on Pa." His dark gaze settled on her. "I didn't reckon you'd ever want to see me again, especially after the disaster I made of my life—and yours."

She leaned back. "George, you’re wearing fine clothing, telling us about your adventures in New York and California." She shook her head. "Doesn't sound to me like your life's a mess."

He chewed his lower lip. "I haven't told you all of it. After I left you, I wandered for a long time. I’m not really clear on all of it, because half the time I was so drunk I didn't know who or where I was."

Cassidy stood. "Well, I have to say, you look none the worse for wear after all you've been through."

"Cassie, I..." George grinned, lifting his thumbs to the lapels of his coat. "I always had a knack for poker. Cleaned out many fellow soldiers during the war."

"Are you telling me you're a professional gambler?"

He grimaced, dropping his gaze. "I'm not the type of man a physician should associate with. To tell the truth, I figured you'd already forgotten me. I expected to find you with a husband and children by now."

"There's no one else, George, if that's what you're getting at. Since you left, I haven't exactly had a slew of suitors at my door." She eyed him, not sure why she'd told him.

My first book will be released by The Wild Rose Press on January 11, 2012. It’s a contemporary story titled “Finding You Again.” I’ve posted the blurb and the excerpt that’s included at the start of the book. The blurb does mention the fact that hero and heroine indulged in sexual activities back in high school, and the excerpt involves the hero suggesting to the heroine that they have a no-strings-attached affair. So one caveat before anybody reads it: while there’s no actual sex shown in the excerpt, there is mention of the heroine physically reacting to the idea.

Blurb:

Maggie Demarco thought she’d have the perfect wedding…until the groom backed out without even saying goodbye. So she packs a bag and flees to the town where she grew up to heal and prepare for the rest of her life.

Eric Holt is surprised when he learns that Maggie’s back in town. He’s never forgotten the hours he spent in high school introducing her to the joys of sex. Of course, he’s also never forgotten the pain of her rejection. But he’s still willing to help her recapture the sexual mojo she lost waiting for her AWOL groom, and he proposes a no-strings-attached affair to prove how desirable she still is.

Neither expect the unintended consequences, when old hurts resurface, new problems arise, and simple sex threatens to turn into the craziest complication of all: love.

Excerpt:

“Maybe for a while you’d like to forget.”

“To forget?”

“What you just went through. Every lousy minute of it.”

Maggie felt something in her stir. Make him spell it out, she thought, even though she was pretty sure where he was going with it. Because if she was wrong, then the moisture starting up between her thighs was a sheer waste.

“And I would do that exactly how?” she asked.

“Have dinner with me again tomorrow.”

“You’re talking about more than dinner, aren’t you?”

“Definitely.”

“A physical relationship?”

“Definitely.”

“Between us, you mean?”

He smiled. “Unless you see somebody at one of the other tables you’d prefer.”

Maggie made a face at him. “Funny man.”

“We used to get along fairly well,” he said. “I think we still can, if we stop sniping at each other. I’m between little loves at the moment, and you’re recovering from your great one.”

She picked up her wineglass. “A proposition. How romantic.”

“Hey, I can be romantic. Buy you candy and flowers, take you to chick flicks, tell you how...” He leaned forward, his voice deepening. “...sexy you are, how desirable.”

Maggie realized her hand was shaking and put the glass down before she drenched the tablecloth.

His voice was vibrating through her, and she knew that couldn’t be good.

What he was proposing couldn’t be good, either.
