Blog of the Year Award

Woot! I was nominated a second time! I now have 2 stars!

I am thrilled to have received this award from the very talented and totally awesome Vonnie Davis. Thank you my friend, for bestowing me with this honor and for your kind words. I can't tell you how much your words meant to me.

Readers, if you've never checked out Vonnie's blog, you should. http://vintagevonnie.blogspot.com/ Vonnie is a talented, generous writer who also has one of my favorite qualities in people - she's funny!

This award is unlike other awards that you can only add to your blog once. This award can be updated with additional stars. For every time your blog is nominated, you get to add an additional star.

There are a total of “6” stars to collect. Which means that you can check out your favorite blogs—and even if they have already been given the award by someone else—you can still make your opinion count and pass it on to them again and help them (or me) reach the maximum of “6” stars.

The rules of the award are simple:

1. Select the blogs you think deserve the 2012 Blog of the Year Award.

2. Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen—there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required and present them with this award.

3. Please include a link back to this page: Blog of the Year Award. http://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-rewards/blog-of-the-year-award/ and include these rules in your post. (Please don’t alter the rules or the badge!)

4. Let the blogs(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the rules with them.

5. You can now join our Facebook page – click the link here. ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award (http://www.facebook.com/groups/BlogoftheYear/) and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience.

Here are the blogs I've chosen to receive this award:

Amie Louellen:  Amie Louellen and I met because we're both published with The Wild Rose Press, and bonded because we're both a little bit crazy. A fantastic friend and writer, I don't know where I'd be without Amie right there to shore me back up when I'm feeling down. She writes comedic romance, which I've always secretly wished I could pull off, and is one of the most supportive writers I know.

AJ Nuest:  What can I say about AJ Nuest...honestly, whenever I picture AJ, I see her in a cheerleading outfit. No, not because she runs around in one, LOL, but because she is probably the biggest cheerleader that the other TWRP authors have. She's always happy and supportive - the bright, sunny spot in the publishing world.

Vonnie Davis:  The rules state I'm allowed to return the favor so I'm going to. Vonnie Davis stated that I'm the author she wants to be when she grows up, well, she's the person I want to be when I grow up. Positive, supportive, generous, funny, an awesome grandma...I could go on and on. Vonnie goes out of her way to make authors feel great about themselves and their writing, and I'm betting that she does the same with the non-authors in her world. One of these days I'll have the pleasure of meeting with Vonnie in person - I look forward to it!

A Letter From Brice Van Sant

I’m not the kind of guy who goes in for all that mushy mumbo jumbo, love talk. It’s just a bunch of hype to sell chocolates and cards on Valentines Day. I happen to know first hand that love is nothing but a lie, an illusion that only brings heartbreak. Once a person buys into the concept, it wreaks havoc in their life Whenever a woman starts getting too close, I break it off and that’s the end of that.

Except for Suzanne. I married Suzanne. I know what you’re thinking, but it wasn’t like that either. See, she was visiting her sister who works for my company, Johnston Carmichael Pharmaceuticals. I was trying to run interference with an ex when somehow I ended up drinking a cup of her homemade herbal shampoo.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I thought too…the next day…after I’d married her. That’s when I realized that the shampoo was actually a love potion! With a product like that I could take my company to the top of the heap. But when I offered to buy the formula, Suzanne told me that she didn’t have it. She makes these kinds of things all the time—shampoo, conditioner, perfume— but never writes down the ingredients.

I’m not proud of what I did next, but I managed to talk Suzanne into recreating the formula. The only problem was our marriage had hit the papers. Half the world already knew that we’d had a whirlwind courtship (if you call one date a courtship), so all this had to be done in secret. I couldn’t let the competition know what I was onto. So Suzanne reluctantly moved into my house and pretended to be my wife while she worked on finding the formula.

This is where things get a little interesting. Who knew that having a sassy redhead underfoot could be such a temptation? And I found out just how badly a person could want something they couldn’t have. But desire and love are two entirely different things. If a man’s not careful he’ll fall into that trap. But that isn’t going to happen to me. I’m not about to fall in love. But give in to desire? What’s a man got to lose?

Summer Scorcher Blog Tour - Intimacy and Other Things Part VI

I hope you’ve been paying attention. There will be a pop quiz at the end of this blog. Okay, I’m just kidding. But if you have missed any other the posts, follow the links below to take you back to the correct one.

Part I   http://www.amielouellen.wordpress.com/
Part II   http://www.lisasanchezromanceauthor.com/
Part III   http://www.ajbooks.blogspot.com
Part IV   http://www.findingthewritewords.blogspot.com/
Part V   http://www.arialburnz.wordpress.com

And use them too if you need to go back and leave a comment! :-)
So…

Brodie and Savanna just did things a little…different. They saw each other, got married, then scrambled backwards through the 12 steps even though they were fighting it the entire time. That’s a romance for ya.

Ever wonder why there are no uber romantic dates in romance novels? It would seem logical, huh? The 12 steps in order and falling into perfect place. Bor-ring. No sexual tension. Not enough conflict. But even after the hero and heroine surrender and make love, their 12 steps may be complete, but their journey is far from over. Here’s an example.

Now we know that Savanna and Brodie have already shared a wedding night pre-first page. But they have to still make that getting-to-know-each-other journey as a couple. Their passions get the better of them, and they make love. But all is not perfect in paradise…

Savanna awoke to bright morning light filtering through the gauzy curtains. The sun’s rays started the day with a golden glow. Birds chirped outside the window, their song floating in on a light breeze.

She closed her eyes in the sheer bliss of it all and stretched, rolling over onto her side and encountering...

Brodie.

Last night—him, her, in this room, in this bed—came flooding back with sterling clarity, bringing with it the earth-shattering realization that she loved him. She loved her temporary, accidental husband!

This was bad. Really, really bad.

It was one thing to sleep with him—share unbridled passion—and know she had never felt so glorious in all of her life. But it was another altogether to fall in love with a man she could never have.

Pulling the sheet from the bed and tucking it around her, she raised up onto her knees and poked Brodie in the chest—hard.

His green eyes blinked once, then twice. She poked him again—even harder this time—as a surge of morning after panic rocked her.

“This changes nothing,” she practically yelled at him. “Nothing, do you hear me!”

“Yeah.” He rubbed the red spots forming on his chest and captured her hand. Undoubtedly so she couldn’t jab him again. “I’m sure the whole house can hear you.”

“It changes nothing. Not one thing.” She lowered her voice, but maybe if she said the words enough times, she could convince herself to believe them. Perhaps she could even convince herself that she wasn’t in love with him.

Conflict doesn’t mean it can’t all work out—one way or another. Of course, you’ll have to read the book to find out. Feel free to head on over to The Wild Rose Press and order a copy, but if you’re feeling lucky, leave me a comment. Maybe your name will be chosen. Yep, that’s right. I’m giving away a .pdf copy of Brodie’s Bride to one lucky winner.

And if that doesn’t make all of your dreams come true, at the end of the tour, the Scorcher girls are giving away a $30 Amazon gift card to one lucky reader. It could be you, but only if you leave a comment! <3 Amie

Just in case you missed a stop on the tour—

Part I    http://www.amielouellen.wordpress.com/
Part II    http://www.lisasanchezromanceauthor.com/
Part III    http://www.ajbooks.blogspot.com
Part IV    http://www.findingthewritewords.blogspot.com/
Part V    http://www.arialburnz.wordpress.com
Part VI    http://www.authorsarahgrimm.blogspot.com

And thanks so much for listening to my ramblings. Good luck in the contest!

Welcome Guest Blogger Amie Louellen

I'm so excited to welcome my friend and fellow Wild Rose Press author Amie Louellen to my blog today!

 The Gift

“Write what you know.”

Sage advice that has been handed down from critic to writer and writer to writer for years…centuries.

And it is total malarkey.

Write what I know (scoffs)—I’m a 30 something (okay, okay, 40 something) baseball mom, dog owner, retail manager, devoted wife, chief cook and bottle washer at my humble little brick colonial in good ol’ Oklahoma. I drive a Ford, would rather eat icing than cake, and wear Crocs instead of house shoes. Who wants to read about that? Gawd, I hope no one is so desperate that my everyday life would be entertaining.

So if it’s not about writing what I know, what do I write about? When asked why he writes horror, Stephen King says he writes what he is given.

Hmmm…but that would mean ideas are gifts.

Yes. Yes, they are. They float down from heaven, rise out of the foggy steam after a summer rain. Are blown about by a gentle gust of wind. And they land where the breeze takes them. It’s what the recipient does with the idea after it falls that separates the men from the boys as they say, or the writers from the talkers.

Many times I have told someone that I’m an author only for them to tell me that they want to write a book…someday. I believe most people would like to be a part of the literary world. In order to be a writer, a person has to be somewhat intelligent, have a grasp of at least one language and have the perseverance to sit in one place long enough to form coherent thoughts—all desirable traits. What most people don’t know is that writing can be like bleeding upon paper. Every word brutal. Dictionary, spell check, synopsis, rejection letters. And then it starts all over again. And you *want* to do this? Are you crazy?

On the flip side, I do believe there is a book inside everyone. Whether or not it can be brought out is another matter altogether. King (yes, I love that man) says that writers are like archeologists. The stories are already there, buried in whatever it is you might want to call it. Just under the surface. An idea brings about the knowledge that the story is there (my words, not his) and then the writer’s job is to extract the story keeping it as intact as possible while trying to bring it out to show the world.

This, my friends, is no small task. Many times I have sat at my computer about to bang my head against the edge of the desk, trying to make a scene flow. Why won’t this work? What’s wrong with it? What’s wrong with me? Nothing, nothing, and nothing. Except…if I try to make the scene into what I want it to be, it doesn’t work. Only when I take a step back, and let it flow naturally does the scene take off again.

Am I saying that I have no control over what I write? Not at all, but I do believe the passion and sincerity shine through when a writer accepts the gift, listens to the muse and lets the story flow the way it was meant to. That’s when the writer takes ownership of the gift and turns it back to the world in a form that all can appreciate.

For any writer out there—aspiring or otherwise—if you haven’t read Stephen King’s On Writing, I highly recommend it. Not only does he cover the passive voice, comma splice, misplaced modifier, etc., he talks about his journey into publication. How long he’s been writing, how he got started, how his ideas form and morph into a full blown story.

Waking up next to a beautiful golden-haired stranger isn’t the worst thing that has ever happened to Brodie Harper, but staying in a fake marriage in order to gain a new construction contract could very well be.

Savanna Morgan just wanted a way out of an engagement to a man she didn’t love. Marrying Brodie seemed liked the perfect answer at the time. Less perfect the next morning when she finds herself disowned by her father and flat broke. Now she must make it through the weekend. Monday they can get it all annulled and forget it ever happened.

The real problem may be keeping their hands off each other until then.

“On Monday, after our appointment, you’re leaving.”

“I have to go home,” she said quietly, turning away from him to stare into the postage-stamp sized back yard.

“But we have an agreement for the weekend. I think we should have some ground rules.”

“Good idea.” Savanna clapped her hands, then rubbed them together as if she were ready to get down to business. “Like what?”

“We only have two working bedrooms here,” Brodie said. “Mine and Nan’s. Do you mind sharing a room with me?”

Her pupils dilated, and he knew she was thinking about the scarlet room they had shared last night.

“My room has two beds,” he continued. “We can be like Lucy and Ricky.”

She smiled. “If it was good enough for the Ricardos, I’m sure I can handle it for a few days.”

“We may not so lucky at the Sullivan’s.”

Sobering, she nodded. “If there’s only one bed there, we can just take turns sleeping in it.”

“Fair enough.” Brodie said. “Now, as a married couple—especially at the ranch—we’ll be expected to act like a married couple.”

“Okay. But only around others. When we’re alone, we can act like we’re not married.”

“Correct. But sometimes…” He took a step closer to where she leaned against the porch railing. “Sometimes married people hold hands.”

He reached out and took her fingers into his own. Her skin was velvet soft and smelled so sweet, like the mountains after a rain.

“I—I don’t have a problem with that.”

“Sometimes married couples put their arms around each other.” He placed her hands behind his neck, then slid his arms around her waist.

“That’s okay,” she whispered. He watched as she swallowed hard.

“And sometimes married people kiss. Just a peck here and a peck there. Are you going to have a problem with that?”

“Huh-uh.” She shook her head.

“Maybe we should practice,” he rasped, bending his head close to hers.

“Maybe,” she repeated before he brushed his lips across hers once, then twice.

His intent had been the small, nearly chaste kiss of old married couple, but once he got close to Savanna, once he could smell her sweetness and taste her heady essence, he couldn’t stop himself.

He pulled her close to him, gathering handfuls of her tank top, securing her to him. Over and over he slanted his mouth across hers. Over and over, deeper and deeper, until her whimper brought him back.

He released her, his breath rasping in and out of his lungs in hard painful gasps.

She grasped the edge of the porch railing, looking as disturbed as he felt.

With demonstrations like that, they may not ever convince Blair and Nan their marriage was an accidental twist of fate, but they would surely convince Red Sullivan their passion was for real.

Brodie ran his fingers through his hair, just one more gesture to keep from reaching for Savanna again.

“There,” he managed to croak. “That wasn’t so bad, now was it?”

Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award

Thanks to the fabulous Amie Louellen, I have once again been awarded the Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award. I'll change things up a bit and give you seven random things about me that I haven't mentioned before. Let's see...

1. I've visited at least 40 of the 50 states.

2. I love to laugh. I tell everyone I'm addicted to it.

3. No one makes me laugh harder than my husband. Well, maybe my best friend Lisa... Lisa and hubs together? Now that's a laugh-fest.

4. My son and I text each other like teenagers. Okay, so he is a teenager, but I'm not. ;)

5. I'm addicted to speed. I can't wait until hubs gets his drag truck back together because this is the year I take it down the track!

6. I'm told I'm the spittin' image of my grandmother when she was my age. I don't see it, but she's beautiful so I smile and say thank you.

7. I really hate trying to come up with random facts about myself. I'd much rather read 7 random facts about you.
