Question of the Day

What draws you to a new author?
Is it:

A positive review?
The recommendation of a friend?
An eye-catching cover?
The book blurb?
Something else?

I'd love to know. And in celebration of 'Read an eBook' week,
I'll give away a pdf copy of
NOT WITHOUT RISK
to a random commenter.

Two things: a flashy cover and the jacket blurb. If the story has anything to do with unsolved mysteries or lost treasure the kind Dan Brown and Clive Cussler write about, I'm in. Sandy Koehler writing as Alison Chambers

Mostly the blurb would draw me in first, then a quick peek at the writing style would clinch it for me.
Sometimes simply the need to find fresh slants and writing styles to read will have me searching for a 'new' writer.
For a debut writer, it would have to be the blurb and/or any reviews that are out.

First the blurb, then the writing. Oh...I see that's what Sherry said above...well, ditto!

I agree - the blurb has to be tight, and catchy, in one of the genres I read. Great covers are icing on the cake. :)

I'd say for new authors I tend to go on friends' recommendations. Most of the gals I hang out with are avid readers, so we usually can't pass up the chance to get each other hooked on something we like!

The cover and a first page that makes me want to keep on reading while standing in the aisle at the store.

milagrosAlthough I'm late posting, I have to agree with the majority. I peek at the blurb first. If it sounds good, I check the first page to see if I like the writer's voice and style. A good cover catches my eye, but I think the blurb is most important.
