Sarah, Where Have You Been?

I've been a bad blogger, but I promise to get better. What has kept me away from the computer these past few weeks? A lot of things...

I quit my day job a while back, and went to work with my husband. He (we) have a family business doing boat repair and since I was majorly unhappy at my day job, which led to stress at home, I threw in the towel and decided to help hubs out. Of course at the time I thought that would lead to more time to spend writing and 'chatting' online with my readers. *Sarah falls off chair laughing* Yeah, that didn't happen. But hey, the stress is waaayyy less now so that's fantastic!

Things are beginning to slow down for me as he moves into a time of year were the most I can do to help is run for parts, but alas, I'm still busy. I've been rearranging the house, moving furniture, painting and cleaning. I convinced hubs we needed new living room furniture the other day and he convinced me we needed a new TV. LOL  The great part of this is I WILL FINALLY GET MY OWN WRITING SPACE!

Wow, can you tell I'm psyched? I'm thinking I may get this desk since our home was built in 1868 so storage is always an issue. What do you think?

I don't want it against a wall, but facing the room so I like that no one will see what I have stashed in it since, let's face it, it won't look so organized or pretty if I'm using it to write.

So that's what I've been up to. I hope you're all having a wonderful summer. I'll be back soon, I promise. After all I have to get ready for MIDNIGHT HEAT's November release, don't I? (yay!!)

What Do You Want to Do?

Lately I’ve been hearing a lot about David Morrell and one of his Five Concepts (http://davidmorrell.net/on-writing/five-further-concepts/ ) specifically his concept on Flow. One of David’s suggestions on keeping the flow of our story from our brains to the page is to “develop a relationship with the story, as if it were a person”. David goes on to suggest that the author ‘literally ask the story, “What do you want to do? Where do you want me to go with you? Why are you stalling?”’

I love this advice! I wonder if he had any idea where some of our characters would take us when asked these questions, though? For instance, this is my conversation with Dominic Price, hero of Midnight Heat:

Sarah: Dominic, where do you want me to go with you?
Dom: Seriously, luv, you have to ask?
Sarah: I guess I do. We’re supposed to be moving forward but you’re stalling. Why are you stalling?
Dom: I could ask you the same thing.
Sarah: What are you talking about?
Dom: Becca. Why isn’t she is my bed yet?
Sarah: Rebecca isn’t one of your groupies, Dominic. You can’t just give her a look, talk to her in that low, sexy accent and have her clothes fall off.
Dom: I don’t sleep with groupies. Not anymore.
     Sarah: I know.
Dom: I don’t sleep with anyone. Not since…if you’d just put her in my bed I could show her how much I’ve changed.
Sarah: Show her you’ve changed and then she’ll welcome you in her bed with open arms.
Dom: How am I supposed to do that?
     Sarah: You tell me.
     Dom: You’re the writer!
Sarah: Yes, I am. And you’re going to have to work for this one, Dom. I know that’s new for you, but stalling isn’t helping. Rebecca needs more convincing before she’ll go to bed with you. The past – how much you hurt her – right now that is greater than her desire.
     Dom: Fuck.
     Sarah: Not yet.
Dom: Bloody hell, you are frustrating!
     Sarah: I love you, too.
Dom: *shakes head and grins* Fine, let’s get on with this, shall we?

It’s a good thing he’s so handsome.

Six Sentence Sunday 1/22

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday! Wow, it feels like months since I participated. Has it really been that long?

Today I decided I'd share with you the first six from my WIP, Midnight Heat.

Dominic Price was fantasizing about another man’s woman. Not just any woman. No, the one on his mind was the wife of the sorry bloke sitting not four feet away, his gaze on the mobile phone near his feet as if he could will the bleedin’ thing to light up.

He was on the twelfth day straight of his imprisonment in the basement recording studio. Nerves were frayed, tempers short, and the ability to string notes together into a proper melody, long gone. If it were up to him, they’d have thrown in the towel hours ago.

Be sure to visit all the other Six Sentence Sunday Authors. You can find a list of them at the OFFICIAL SITE.
