The Last Straw by Nia Simone

Please help me welcome debut author Nia Simone to the blog today. Nia is here as part of her Super Book Blast, celebrating the release of The Last Straw. Please note that The Last Straw is available for FREE at Amazon THIS WEEK ONLY. Oh, and make sure to leave Nia a comment, as one randomly drawn commenter will win a $25 Amazon gift card.

Ally Tobin left New York after one too many bad dates, determined to rebuild a stable life and career as a private investigator in Silicon Valley. But when the man she knew as one name walks into her office with another, will her curiosity once again lead her to risk her heart?

The last thing Special Agent Jared Green needs is "security risk" stamped on the resume of his latest undercover identity. Especially by the woman his job forced him to leave in New York without any explanation. She may threaten his cover, but it's his heart on the line.

He's good at playing a part. She's good at catching a fake. Can they trust enough to give love another chance?

EXCERPT:

He sauntered through the door, a white, button- down shirt tucked into belted khakis. When his dark gaze found her, he stopped. Stared. Her throat dried and a rustling motion stirred in her abdomen.

“Hi. I’m Darren Ray.”

Keep your cool, she commanded herself, standing and reaching across the desk. His hand was rough.

She yanked her hand back and waved at the chair. “Please, have a seat.” He waited for her to sit before settling in the visitor’s chair. “So, Darren, according to this, you’re being considered for a programmer position in the IT department. Tell me about your background.”

A professional mask settled over his features. “As you can see on my résumé, I have several years of consulting experience.”

“Tell me something about your experience as a mechanic.” Working on his prized old Mustang had been a favorite hobby.

The corner of his mouth twitched. “What do you mean? That’s not in my résumé.”

“You don’t have the hands of a programmer. More of a mechanic.” Oh, his hands.

“Okay, you got me.” He was going to confess. This should be good. “When I’m not programming computers I’m working on my car.”

“And what were you doing in New York City?”

He reached across her desk for a piece of paper, plucked a pen from its stand and scrawled something. When she took the note their fingers brushed. Meet me for dinner at Pico’s at 7. I’ll explain everything. Can’t talk here.

Nia Simone grew up on the side of a ski slope in Squaw Valley, USA. Later, while learning the craft of story writing, she worked in nonprofit and then high-tech.

The best part of working in the computer field was meeting her husband. He took up skiing and she helped him document his computer inventions! They live in "Silicon Valley" in California where their favorite thing to do is cook together for friends. Nia’s specialties are dessert and veggies while her husband’s are entrees and sourdough bread.

Their only pet at the moment is the sourdough starter, which lives in the fridge and requires bi-weekly feeding.

Nia blogs every day about travel, food, writing, books, skiing and photography at niasimoneauthor.com (where she won the Versatile Blogger Award and Inspiring Blogger Award).

News!!!

Sometime over the next week or so you may notice my contemporary romance, AFTER MIDNIGHT, disappearing from online stores. Why? My contract with The Wild Rose Press is up and while I enjoyed working with them, I have made the decision to get my rights to the book reverted back to me so I can make a few minor changes and re-release it myself.

When I first sat down and began working on After Midnight, I never imaged it would turn into a series. I didn’t expect that the secondary characters would reach out and grab me by the heart the way they have. Or that ‘I guess I’m going to have to write Dominic’s story’ would quickly coalesce into a third and fourth book. I’m not complaining, oh no, writing about hot, sexy rock gods is a wonderful thing let me tell you. And revisiting Isa and Noah as they weave their way through the books…that’s icing on the cake.

So while After Midnight slowly begins to disappear from those online shelves, don’t worry. It’s coming back soon – with a sexy new cover!

What do you think???

AFTER MIDNIGHT (Black Phoenix #1) will re-release October 2013.

And don’t miss Dominic’s story,
MIDNIGHT HEAT (Black Phoenix #2) coming this November!
(cover reveal coming soon)

She discovers chivalry isn’t dead after all when a mysterious stranger comes to her rescue. He’s wearing black leather and a mischievous smile that promises to be exactly what she needs.

As the town erupts with the news of his return, Michael’s dark past comes back to haunt him, putting Cat in danger. Someone is threatening her life and the life of her family. Desperate to keep history from repeating itself, Michael offers her his family’s name in order to keep her safe. When the lie spirals beyond their control, can they stop their hearts from becoming entangled as well?

Sarah Grimm's Clearing House "Sweep"stakes!

This giveaway is closed. Thank you for participating!
Winners, randomly drawn are: Kim Urban and NoraA.
Look for an email in your inbox coming from me today.

If you friended (http://www.facebook.com/AuthorSarahGrimm) or liked (http://www.facebook.com/SarahGrimm.Author) me on Facebook then you may have seen that I am on a cleaning/reorganizing binge.

A few weekends ago I announced to my husband that I hated our living room furniture and wanted new furniture. Surprisingly, he agreed. This led to cleaning out the living room, painting it, moving furniture from dining room/computer room into living room and quite honestly, a bit of a chaotic mess around here.

I’d love to tell you that everything is back to normal, but…the most I can say is the new furniture is here and I’m thrilled to realize that I will get my own writing space out of this. No more writing at the kitchen table for me. Woot! What does this mean for you, my readers and friends? I’m glad you asked.

While cleaning out the corners and hidey holes I discovered two zippered tote bags from my trip to Romantic Times Booklovers Convention this year. Two untouched totes that we received when we checked in. And guess what? I’ve decided to gift them to two (2) lucky readers. Because I also realized I have too many print copies of my contemporary romance, After Midnight, I’ll include a signed copy of the book in each bag.

What do you have to do to be in the drawing for these goodie filled totes? Well, that depends on how many times you would like to be entered. Entering is easy, it’s fun, and you can do it via the Rafflecopter form below.

Good luck! And hey, help me spread the word will you?

Today I thought I would talk a little bit about my favorite type of romance hero: The Damaged Hero

They draw us in with their gut-wrenching pasts and their painful presents - the lost soul, so damaged by the million different things life has thrown at him he grows defeated, feels adrift and unworthy. We love their stories, no matter how painful or bittersweet. We yearn to see them find happiness as they travel down that long, difficult road toward happily-ever-after.

With a damaged hero, what you see on the outside is never what you get on the inside. The damaged hero feels deeply and I think that’s one of the reasons he appeals to female readers. I know when I read about a damaged hero I want to nurture and ‘heal’ him. I just can’t help myself.

There are many types of damaged heroes:

• Scarred - A scarred hero has visible damage. His body has suffered a lot and is usually covered in scars. The loss of his looks is a real blow for this type of hero.

• Wounded – A wounded hero can also have scars, but he also has physical damage. He has lost one or more of his senses, suffers disabling headaches or is dealing with lost or limited mobility.

• Tortured – A tortured hero is a damaged hero at the end of his rope. He is at his lowest point. He believes himself unworthy of love, most likely from being emotionally or mentally abused at some point in his life.

• Tragic – A tragic hero is an emotionally damaged hero. He’s lost family, friends, careers, purpose, and drive. He doesn’t want to/can’t possibly love again for losing that love just might kill him.

• Burdened – A burdened hero is a damaged hero who acts alone. His experiences in life have shown him he can’t trust others. A burdened hero may be harboring a deep, dark secret. He could be seeking vengeance, revenge, or absolution.

From my own writings, Sergeant Justin Harrison in NOT WITHOUT RISK is a wounded hero. A San Diego homicide detective, Justin is all cop. It’s all he knows, everything he is. His job defines him. Or so he believes, until the day a long-legged brunette stumbles into his crime scene and tips his world off its axis. Struggling against lingering physical limitations from taking a bullet, the last thing Justin wants is an unwelcome attraction. But as he works to uncover the identity of the person who killed her friend and is now threatening her life, Justin discovers Paige Conroy is exactly what he needs.

Who are some of your favorite damaged heroes?

HER SISTER by Karen Rose Smith

Welcome! Thanks for dropping in for a visit today. Don't forget to leave a comment as readers who comment are eligible to win a Landau charm bracelet or Amazon gift card!!

BLURB:

Clare's little sister, Lynnie, was abducted twenty-seven years ago. Now the retired detective who has never been able to let go of the cold case has a lead. Lynnie could be alive!

Clare's neighbor, Joe, an occasional friend until now, gives her support and...wants more than friendship.

Clare's mom, Amanda, thrown together again with her ex-husband into a crisis discovers forgotten love beneath the regrets.

Clare's sixteen year old daughter, Shara, decides to run from her problems instead of facing them.

A devoted sister, a turmoiled mom and a rebellious daughter find their way back to each other in this contemporary ebook about three generations who discover love can knit their family back together again.

EXCERPT:

Stepping closer, keeping his eyes on hers, Joe took her by the shoulders. "You can't solve your parents' problems, but you can let them help you. You can be here for Shara. You've got to keep the best possible outlook on this, not the worst, and you'll be able to keep in touch with your parents to know what's happening every step of the way. That's what cell phones and texting are for, right?"

Thinking about it, Clare found herself biting her lower lip, feeling younger than she was, feeling uncertain about everything.

"Your parents probably don't know how much they hurt you. Have you ever told them?"

She'd let a little of that come out today. Still … "How could I tell them when they were hurting so badly because Lynnie was gone. I let some of my feelings slip today. They seemed shocked, actually shocked. Are they really so clueless?"

"They're human, Clare. They've tried to do their best, but that just wasn't enough with you. You have to decide if you're going to forgive them and move out of this, or if you're always going to hold bitterness toward them."

She saw the look in his eyes and the road she should take. "You're going to tell me bitterness is only going to hurt me, not them."

"No, I’m not. It will hurt all of you."

His eyes were so kind and compassionate that she found tears coming to hers. Blinking hard, she tried to turn away. But instead of letting her, he pulled her into a hug and he held her tight.

Sarah, Where Have You Been?

I've been a bad blogger, but I promise to get better. What has kept me away from the computer these past few weeks? A lot of things...

I quit my day job a while back, and went to work with my husband. He (we) have a family business doing boat repair and since I was majorly unhappy at my day job, which led to stress at home, I threw in the towel and decided to help hubs out. Of course at the time I thought that would lead to more time to spend writing and 'chatting' online with my readers. *Sarah falls off chair laughing* Yeah, that didn't happen. But hey, the stress is waaayyy less now so that's fantastic!

Things are beginning to slow down for me as he moves into a time of year were the most I can do to help is run for parts, but alas, I'm still busy. I've been rearranging the house, moving furniture, painting and cleaning. I convinced hubs we needed new living room furniture the other day and he convinced me we needed a new TV. LOL  The great part of this is I WILL FINALLY GET MY OWN WRITING SPACE!

Wow, can you tell I'm psyched? I'm thinking I may get this desk since our home was built in 1868 so storage is always an issue. What do you think?

I don't want it against a wall, but facing the room so I like that no one will see what I have stashed in it since, let's face it, it won't look so organized or pretty if I'm using it to write.

So that's what I've been up to. I hope you're all having a wonderful summer. I'll be back soon, I promise. After all I have to get ready for MIDNIGHT HEAT's November release, don't I? (yay!!)

ADULT EXCERPT:

The bedroom door had barely clicked behind me when Samantha grabbed and shoved me toward the bed. I fell backward, and she was on top of me, clawing at my clothes and ripping off her own. Whatever had been going on with her all day was now clearly finding a release.

“Sam?”

She kissed me roughly and shoved her tongue into my mouth. I groaned and pushed her back. Though we french kissed all the time, I generally kept her out of my mouth.

“Sam?”

Finally, she stilled. With her hands braced on my shoulders, her eyes burned down into mine. Her anger squeezed my chest. Her voice was strained. “Lucien, we’ll talk later. I promise. But right now I want you, and I need you. And I need you to know it, feel it.” Her words clarified little, but I nodded.

She unleashed herself on me, kissing and licking and roughly nipping at my upper body all while maintaining eye contact. I thrust my hips into her when she lingered over my Blood Mark. I finally had to grab her hair and tug her attention away from it.

With a groan, she reached a hand down between her legs and worked herself as she devoured me. When I realized what she was doing, I moaned and gripped her shoulders and rolled on top of her.

I grabbed her hand and pulled it to my mouth, then noisily sucked on her wet fingers. I groaned at the sweet nectar of her arousal.

“You see what you do to me, Lucien? What only you do to me?” she rasped. “Take me, Lucien. I’m yours,” she offered as she planted her feet flat on the mattress and pushed herself up forcefully against my erection.

Her aggression spurred mine, and I grunted. “You want me?” I asked as I ground myself against her wetness. She ran a hand over the bedspread and found the packet she’d apparently laid out earlier. She slid herself against me as she opened it and then rolled on the condom. “God, yes,” she whimpered.

I plunged forward and filled her in one hard stroke. She screamed and wrapped herself around me. Hard breaths and grunts and strained curses in two languages filled the room as we battled through Samantha’s emotions with our bodies. She kissed me roughly and dug her nails into my flesh. The physical pain mingled with her radiating pleasure to coax what I was sure was going to be one of the most intense orgasms I’d ever experienced.

She came in a frenzy of screams and muscle contractions. And then bit against the taut skin at the base of my neck. Hard.

My fangs and release shot out at the same time. I growled and in a blur turned my head in search of my biceps. I missed the tender skin of her shoulder by a hair as the urge to bite down became irresistible.

Finally, I willed my fangs to retract and licked at the wound I’d made on my arm, then slid down a little and laid my head on her heaving breasts.

“I love you,” I whispered breathlessly.

She hugged my shoulders and combed her fingers through my hair. “I love you, too.” We lay together, panting, for a long time. “Lucien?” I lifted my head off her chest to look at her. “I’m ready to talk now.”
